A Mediterranean diet is one of the healthiest consisting of fruit, vegetables, grains, fish, dairy, oil, and reducing red meat. However, in a new randomized cross-over study1 a vegan diet eliminating meat, fish, and dairy was significantly better for health and losing weight.2
In 16 weeks vegan participants lost an average of 13 lbs while those on the Mediterranean diet lost nothing. Vegan participants decreased total cholesterol by 18.7 mg/dL and LDL (bad) cholesterol by 15.3 mg/dL, with no changes on the Mediterranean diet.
